As a homeowner you have to make a tough decision whether to have hardwood flooring or Carpet. Sometimes you just have to go with both. Area Rugs are a beautiful addition to your home, however most of them are highly expensive and delicate. As a homeowner you will love to preserve your investment and understand how to clean rugs. Here are a couple of Cleaning Tips that might come in handy when it is time to clean your Area Rug.
The first step to preserving your rug clean is flipping your rug upside down once a month and vacuum the back of the rug. Use the rotating brush part of the vacuum for the back part of the rug and use the suction wand for the front part of the rug.
The Second step is be aware of sprays or carpet shampoos! Most carpet cleaning products or sprays are made for wall-to-wall carpet and not area rugs. If you do use shampoo make sure there isn’t any soap residue left in the rug because it will attract dirt. This will cause your carpet to get dirtier faster than you cleaned it. Always use a towel to test the product you are going to use on your area rug to make sure it will not stain or damage your carpet.
The Third step is making sure you clean all spills or stains that occur at that very moment as soon as possible! If a spill occurs grab a white cotton towel and blot on the spillage. Please do not rub in a circle because it can cause damage to your rug. Continue this process until you have absorbed as much of the stain as possible. If you have spilled milk on the rug use mild detergent and water to clean the milk stain. Now for red wine spills use 10% hydrogen peroxide and dawn liquid soap to your white cotton towel and blot on the stain until most of it is gone.
Now last but not least for those homeowners who are pet owners there is tip to help neutralize pet odors. You can neutralize the odor by mixing 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts of water and a white towel & pressure till the odor is gone.
REMEMBER: Vacuum your Area Rug weekly from both sides.
Rotate your Area rugs once year. Also all rugs should be rolled and not folded.
